The Foundation was created as a tax exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the mid-1990's. Our first project was to purchase the hardware and software necessary to bring SMILES (San Marino Interactive Library & Education System) to the community and to the schools. The response of the community was gratifying and contributions exceeded $250,000.
For the past 10 years, the Foundation has dedicated its efforts toward a $17 million capital campaign to build a new library. The City of San Marino will provide $5.5 million in funding for the project coupled with a generous gift of $4 million from the Donald Crowell family leaves $7.5 million being sought out by the Foundation. To date, there are nearly 1,000 donors to the Brand New Library Campaign and the list keeps growing.
Currently, there are 17 Directors of the Foundation, serving terms of 1 - 3 years. The public library's Board of Trustees and the Friends of the San Marino Public Library are represented as liaisons on the Foundation's Board of Directors.
